Your bitcoin are not inside your phone
It is easy to imagine a wallet as a folder that stores digital coins on your device. Bitcoin does not work that way.
The Bitcoin network maintains the shared history of transactions and spendable amounts. Your wallet reads that information and shows you which bitcoin you can control.
What does a wallet actually hold?
The most important thing a self-custody wallet manages is your cryptographic keys. With them, it can create addresses, identify the amounts you control, and sign transactions.
The app is the tool that helps you use those keys. It is not the same thing as your bitcoin.
What does it mean to “own” bitcoin?
In practice, it means controlling the keys that can authorize spending specific amounts on the Bitcoin network.
So owning bitcoin does not mean having a file full of coins on your phone. It means having the control needed to create a valid transaction.
An address and a private key are not the same thing
A Bitcoin receiving address can be shared when you want to receive bitcoin. It is not secret.
Private keys must remain secret. They are what let your wallet prove that you are authorized to spend the bitcoin you control.
What if your phone is lost or breaks?
Losing the device does not necessarily mean losing the bitcoin. If you have safely kept the backup or recovery phrase for a self-custody wallet, you can restore access in a compatible wallet.
But if the keys are lost and there is no safe backup, there is no central service that can restore access for you.
What changes when bitcoin is on an exchange?
When your balance is held on an exchange, the exchange usually controls the keys while you see a balance in your account.
With a self-custody wallet, you control the keys. That is the basic difference between seeing bitcoin in a service account and controlling access to it yourself on the Bitcoin network.
Frequently asked questions
Are bitcoin stored inside the wallet app?
No. The wallet app manages keys and reads information from the Bitcoin network.
If I delete the wallet app, do I lose the bitcoin?
Not necessarily. With a safe and correct backup, you can restore access. Without a backup, access may be lost permanently.
Is a Bitcoin address secret?
No. A receiving address is designed to be shared when you want to receive bitcoin. Private keys and the recovery phrase must remain secret.
What does self-custody mean?
It means you control the keys to your wallet rather than a third-party service or exchange.
