What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is a digital money system that can operate without a bank, company, or central administrator.

Instead of relying on one central authority to keep the record of transactions and decide who can use the system, Bitcoin relies on a global network of independent computers following the same rules.

That is what makes it different from most forms of digital money we use today.

Why was it created?

Bitcoin appeared in 2009 with a simple but ambitious idea: to allow two people to transfer value over the internet without needing to trust a bank or another intermediary.

That does not mean banks disappear, or that everyone has to use Bitcoin. It means that, for the first time, there is a digital system that can operate without depending on a single organization.

Who controls it?

There is no Bitcoin CEO and no company that can change the rules on its own.

The network works because many different participants run software that checks whether transactions and new bitcoin follow a defined set of rules.

That does not mean there are no rules. It means no one controls the rules alone.

Is Bitcoin just a digital currency?

Not exactly.

Bitcoin is the network and system, while bitcoin is the unit of value used within it.

As you learn more, you will come across ideas such as wallets, private keys, mining, blocks, and fees. You do not need to understand all of them on day one.

Where should I start?

The most useful first step is to understand what problem Bitcoin is trying to solve and why it works differently from a normal banking system.

Once that foundation is clear, the technical details become much easier to understand.
